Step 4 of 5 · How to compare

Compare correctly today, pay less tomorrow

✔ The same amount can cost 15%–35% more depending on the lender. The difference? The comparison method.

💡 Worked example: a €100,000 loan at 18% APR over 36 months costs ~€25,500 in interest. The same loan at 28% APR costs ~€42,000 — a €16,500 difference.

1) Effective APR

APR bundles origination fees, mandatory insurance and charges. In Slovenija, it is the only figure that fairly compares two offers.

2) Total cost of credit

Monthly payment × number of payments, minus principal. That is the real cost — the number to minimise.

3) Prepayment flexibility

Does the lender allow early repayment without penalty? Some do, others charge 2%–5%.

4) Monthly pressure

Aim to keep total monthly debt payments under about 35–40% of net income.

5) The three-offer rule

Get at least 3 offers (bank + fintech/credit union + alt bank) and benchmark them against identical criteria.

6) Fixed vs variable rate

In a high-rate environment, prefer fixed. When rates are falling, variable often wins.

⚠️ "0% balance transfer" offers only make sense if you can pay off the balance before the promo period ends.

How to compare loan offers in Slovenija | WebbFinanceiro

Comparing credit card loan offers in Slovenia is about more than just looking at the interest rate. It’s important to understand the full cost of borrowing, including all fees, insurance, and how the repayment schedule fits your budget. By carefully reviewing each offer, you can make a more informed decision and avoid unexpected costs. Taking the time to compare options conservatively helps protect your finances and ensures you choose a loan that matches your needs and ability to repay.

Look Beyond the Headline Rate

While the advertised interest rate can be appealing, it may not reflect the true cost of borrowing. In Slovenia, lenders usually display both the nominal interest rate and the annual percentage rate (APR or EOM), which includes most fees and charges. Always compare the APRs of different offers, as this gives a clearer picture of the total cost. Be cautious of offers that highlight only the nominal rate, as additional fees or insurance can significantly increase your actual expenses.

Understand All Fees and Charges

Loan agreements can include various fees, such as processing costs, account maintenance, early repayment penalties, and late payment charges. These can vary by lender and may be listed in the small print. Before deciding, ask for a breakdown of all possible fees in euros (EUR). This helps you compare offers on a like-for-like basis and avoid surprises later. Remember, some fees may be one-off, while others can recur throughout the loan term.

Check Repayment Terms and Flexibility

Repayment schedules can differ between lenders. Some may offer flexible repayment dates or allow early repayments, sometimes with a fee. Others may have strict schedules and higher penalties for late payments. Consider how the monthly payment fits your budget and whether you might need the option to repay early. Always check if there are any conditions or costs attached to making extra payments, as these can affect your total loan cost.

Educational Example: Comparing Two Offers

Suppose you are offered two credit card loans of €2,000. Offer A has a nominal rate of 7% but includes a €50 processing fee and €20 annual maintenance. Offer B has a nominal rate of 8% but no extra fees. When calculating the APR, Offer A may end up costing more over time, despite the lower headline rate. This example shows why it’s important to look at the total cost in euros, not just the interest rate.

⚠️ Borrowing always involves risk. Only take on credit you are confident you can repay, and avoid offers that seem unclear or too good to be true. Missing repayments can lead to extra costs and impact your credit history in Slovenia.

Quick checklist

  • Compare the APR (annual percentage rate), not just the nominal rate
  • Request a full list of all fees and charges in euros
  • Check if early repayment is allowed and if there are penalties
  • Review the monthly payment amount and total repayment period
  • Ask about late payment fees and how they are applied
  • Read the full terms and conditions before signing
